Introduction

This project will examine what might occur if one were to apply the ideas of postmodernism to a modernist institution in an attempt to change the institution. Since postmodernism is a mish-mash of ideas cobbled together, the expectation is that such a project will be futile. That the institution in question is the public library, an institution only one step behind the museum as a paragon of modernism, should be expected to make the task at hand even more difficult. However, it shall be seen that the works of filmmaker Peter Greenaway can be used as an example of how a modernist format (in his case, film) can be turned into a postmodernist one without making too many people flee screaming from the room.

Therefore, to get to our discussion of the proposed Peter Greenaway Public Library, we shall first be looking at the three ingredients necessary: The Modern Library, Postmodernism, and Peter Greenaway.

The reader should also be warned that this is a self-reflexive project, one that shall draw upon itself as bearing content pertinent to the argument at hand.
